Pet Transport from Brisbane to Thailand: Via Sydney or Melbourne

Pet transport from Brisbane to Thailand starts with an awkward fact: the city’s only nonstop to Bangkok cannot carry a dog or cat. Jetstar is the sole airline on the route, and its help page says it is not equipped to transport pets and points owners to Qantas Freight. Qantas Freight’s own pet FAQ says it accepts no pet bookings on any Jetstar service.

So the real route begins in Sydney or Melbourne. A Brisbane pet gets there by road or on a domestic flight, then joins an international flight that accepts animals as cargo. The first leg decides whether the rest works: which domestic flights take pets, how long the handover needs, what a hot forecast does to the booking, and which DAFF office is waiting at the other end.

The national process is the same for every Australian pet. Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) signs the pet out, and Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development (DLD) signs it in. Brisbane changes the route, the clock, two Queensland records and the way home.

Brisbane Has One Nonstop to Bangkok, and Pets Cannot Use It

Flightconnections, updated on 7 October 2026, lists Jetstar as the only airline flying Brisbane to Bangkok nonstop. It runs five times a week on a Boeing 787-8, leaves between 1:00pm and 1:40pm, and takes about 9 hours 20 minutes. For a passenger it is a good flight. For Brisbane to Bangkok pet flights it is closed, and for three separate reasons.

Jetstar has no pet service. Its help page, Can my pet fly with Jetstar?, says the airline is not equipped to transport pets and tells owners to organise pet travel with Qantas Freight. A cheap family fare does nothing for the animal.

Qantas Freight will not take the pet to the Jetstar flight. Its pet travel FAQ says it does not accept pet bookings on any Jetstar service, so the referral on Jetstar’s page cannot put a pet on the Brisbane nonstop. On its own network, only selected domestic flights are open to pets.

Thai Airways does not carry Brisbane pets as baggage. Its checked-baggage pet policy lists flights to and from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney among the routes where pets cannot travel as baggage, because of quarantine or other conditions, and sends cargo requests to THAI Cargo. Flightconnections shows no Thai Airways nonstop from Brisbane in any case.

No airline takes a dog or cat in the cabin on these routes either, as our check of cabin rules between Australia and Thailand confirmed. Our cabin versus cargo guide explains what manifested cargo means for the animal.

A route map invites a tidy assumption: the flight that suits the family suits the pet. It does not, because a pet is booked through a different desk, onto different flights, against different cut-offs. The nonstop looks like the door that fits and has no handle on the pet’s side. The planning question has to be turned around. Start with the international flight that will accept the animal, then work back to Brisbane.

The International Flight Starts in Sydney or Melbourne

Our comparison of Australian departure airports for pet flights to Thailand reaches the same conclusion for Brisbane: plan around Sydney or Melbourne as the departure point. In practice, pet transport from Brisbane to Thailand is a Sydney or Melbourne departure with a domestic leg in front of it. Sydney is the shorter hop, and our Sydney pet guide covers the international flight and the Bangkok landing clock from there. The airport comparison covers Melbourne. Which one suits your pet depends on the cargo desk accepting that animal, that crate and that date, so get acceptance in writing before anything else is booked.

There are two ways to get a Brisbane pet to the departure city. One is a pet-carrying road service, which the airport comparison describes as driving the pet down with an interstate transport service. The other is a domestic flight, and that comes with rules of its own.

The Domestic Flight Has Its Own Rules

Qantas Freight is the domestic carrier owners are pointed to, and its published rules set the shape of the plan:

  • Pets fly only on selected Qantas domestic services, those numbered QF400 and above, and each aircraft has a limit on pet numbers, so your preferred flight can already be full.
  • A transfer between two flights needs 120 minutes in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, and 90 minutes at other airports. Qantas Freight cannot meet a shorter connection.
  • An itinerary that transfers from a domestic flight to an international one has to be booked with a pet travel specialist, which is Qantas Freight’s instruction.
  • A pet must be at least 12 weeks old, and a pet over 12 years old needs a vet certificate saying it is healthy enough to fly.
  • A pet and crate that together weigh more than 50 kg need a phone call, so the airline can check the aircraft type.

The third rule changes who you hire. Qantas Freight sends that kind of connection to a specialist, so a Brisbane owner should not book a domestic leg and hope it lines up with an international flight in Sydney. The two legs belong in one itinerary, arranged by someone who handles both.

The domestic leg and the international flight have to work as one plan, so we plan your pet’s route out of Brisbane before anything is booked.

A Hot Forecast Can Move the Whole Plan

Qantas Freight does not carry animals when the temperature is expected to be above 35°C or below 5°C. A pet booked on such a day is rebooked at no extra cost, even on the day of travel, and the airline advises checking the forecast at the departure airport, the arrival airport and any transit stop. A Queensland summer is where the upper limit bites hardest, but a hot forecast in Sydney counts as much as one in Brisbane.

The rebooking is free. The dates around it are not. DAFF’s guide to exporting companion animals requires the final veterinary examination within 72 hours of departure, and it makes leaving within 72 hours after the export permit is issued a condition of that permit. A domestic flight that slips by a day inside that window uses a large share of it, and DAFF asks you to contact the regional office that issued the permit if the animal does not leave as planned.

The plan therefore needs slack on the domestic leg. A flight the day before the international departure leaves a spare day inside the window, at the cost of finding somewhere for the pet to stay overnight in Sydney. A same-morning connection needs the 120-minute transfer to hold and leaves no room to rebook. Neither is a rule. The cargo desk and the specialist should price both, so that the choice is made on purpose.

Which DAFF Office Handles a Brisbane Pet

DAFF tells owners to email the Notice of Intention to Export to the regional office in the state or territory of departure, at least 10 working days before the departure date. For a Brisbane pet that leaves Australia from Sydney, we read that as the New South Wales office, and we would confirm it with DAFF before lodging, because it decides where the documents go. Our Sydney pet guide lodges its Notice of Intention with the New South Wales office on the same logic, and our Notice of Intention guide shows the form.

The sequence after that is fixed. The registered veterinarian does the final examination, within 72 hours of departure and before the appointment with DAFF’s certifying officer. The DAFF appointment is with the regional office you nominate on the Notice of Intention, and a pet transport company can attend it for you. DAFF also says it will tell you if the importing country needs the animal present so officers can verify its identity. Ask at the Notice of Intention stage whether Thailand does, because a yes puts the pet in the departure city before the appointment, not just on the day of the flight.

Our export health certificate guide describes the certificate DAFF issues once it is satisfied the pet meets Thailand’s conditions.

The Queensland Side: Microchips, Councils and a Closed Registry

On the Queensland side, pet transport from Brisbane to Thailand starts with two records that are easy to confuse. Queensland has required cats and dogs to be microchipped since 1 July 2009, and dogs must also be registered, according to the City of Gold Coast, which sets out the rules for owners. Council registration sits with your local council. The microchip registry is a separate database that holds its own copy of your contact details.

The same council page says the HomeSafeID registry closed in February 2025 and lists four registries that keep microchip records: the Australasian Animal Registry, Central Animal Records, Global Micro Animal Registry and Petsafe. Its Pet Address lookup shows which one holds a given chip. If your pet was chipped some years ago, look the number up and confirm the contact details work from overseas. A scanned chip only brings the pet home if the database can reach you.

The clocks add one more Brisbane wrinkle. The NSW Government says New South Wales and Victoria observe daylight saving until 4 April 2027, and Queensland does not, so Sydney runs an hour ahead of Brisbane until then. Bangkok does not change its clocks, so it sits three hours behind Brisbane all year and four hours behind Sydney while daylight saving lasts. A vet visit at 3pm in Brisbane is 4pm on the Sydney flight’s clock, so count the 72-hour limits in elapsed hours, not calendar days.

What Thailand Asks For, Whichever City the Pet Leaves From

The Thailand pet import permit and its vaccine rules do not change with the departure city. The DLD’s instructions ask dogs for rabies, canine distemper, canine hepatitis, canine parvovirus and leptospirosis vaccines, and cats for rabies and feline panleukopenia. Each goes on an English-language record with the microchip number and the vet’s name, licence number and signature. For cargo, the Form R1/1 permit application goes to the quarantine station by email at least 7 working days before arrival, and the permit stays valid for 60 days. Our guide to Thailand’s R1/1, R-6 and R-7 forms walks through each one, and our Suvarnabhumi arrival guide follows the pet after landing.

Taking a dog from Brisbane to Thailand adds the full vaccine list and often a breed question, which our guide to taking a dog to Thailand covers. For flying a cat from Brisbane to Bangkok, ask the vet to write feline panleukopenia on the record by name, and see our cat transport guide. Both Qantas Freight and DAFF require a crate that meets IATA standards, so the crate you buy for the domestic leg is the crate that flies to Bangkok, and our guide to measuring a pet for a flight crate shows how to size it.

Pet Transport from Brisbane to Thailand, Week by Week

For a healthy pet that has never had a rabies vaccination, this order suits a Brisbane household using the Sydney route:

When What happens The Brisbane detail
Three months or more out Vet visit: microchip scan, and the vaccines Thailand lists Look up which registry holds the chip and update your contact details
Ten to twelve weeks out Choose the international departure city and get cargo acceptance in writing Ask the specialist to price the domestic leg inside the same plan
Six to eight weeks out Buy the crate and start crate training One IATA-standard crate has to serve both flights
Four to six weeks out Email the R1/1 application to the quarantine station at the arrival airport Suvarnabhumi for Bangkok and anywhere reached through Bangkok
At least 10 working days out Lodge the Notice of Intention and book the final vet exam Confirm which DAFF regional office takes it before you send it
Within 72 hours of departure Final vet exam in Brisbane, then the DAFF appointment and permit The permit needs the animal to leave within 72 hours of issue
Day before or day of departure Domestic leg to the departure city 120-minute transfer; check the forecast at both airports

The weeks before the permit application can absorb a delay. The last 72 hours cannot, which is why the domestic leg is the part of a Brisbane move that needs a second plan. Our guide to what happens when pets fly cargo follows the crate from drop-off to loading.

Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Further North

Households on the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast follow the same plan with a drive added to the front. Owners further north add another domestic leg ahead of Brisbane, and Qantas Freight’s 90-minute transfer applies at the smaller airports. Every extra leg is another handling step and another place for a forecast to move the date, which is why a crate the pet has already learned to rest in is worth the weeks of training.

Coming Home Means Landing in Victoria

Some Brisbane households plan to return. Thailand is not on Australia’s approved country list, so the pet must first complete a qualifying stay in an approved country, which our guide to why pets cannot fly directly from Thailand to Australia explains. Our guide to preparing a pet to return to Australia before you leave covers what to arrange now.

Returning cats and dogs arrive at Melbourne for quarantine at Mickleham, as our Mickleham guide describes. A Queensland family therefore collects its pet in Victoria and needs the domestic leg again, northbound, on the same Qantas Freight terms: selected flights, no Jetstar and the 35°C limit. Pet transport from Brisbane to Thailand needs the way home planned before the pet leaves, not after.

The household shipment is a separate job. Our guides for Australians moving to Thailand and the cost of moving from Australia to Thailand cover it, and our Australia to Thailand pet transport cost guide explains what drives the pet’s own bill.

We plan your pet’s move from Brisbane to Thailand around the domestic leg.

Tell us about your dog or cat and your travel month in about 60 seconds, and we line up the vet, DAFF and Thai permit steps around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my pet fly nonstop from Brisbane to Bangkok?

No. Jetstar is the only airline on the nonstop and its help page says it is not equipped to transport pets. Qantas Freight accepts no pet bookings on Jetstar services, and Thai Airways does not carry pets as baggage on Brisbane flights. A Brisbane pet leaves from Sydney or Melbourne on an international cargo booking.

Which DAFF office handles a Brisbane pet’s Notice of Intention?

DAFF says to email it to the regional office in the state or territory of departure, at least 10 working days before departure. For a pet that leaves Australia from Sydney we read that as the New South Wales office. Confirm it with DAFF, or with whoever lodges it for you, before sending.

What does Qantas Freight’s temperature rule mean for the Brisbane to Sydney flight?

Qantas Freight does not carry animals when the temperature is expected to be above 35°C or below 5°C, and it rebooks at no extra cost. DAFF requires the final vet exam within 72 hours of departure and the animal to leave within 72 hours of the permit being issued, so leave slack on the domestic leg.

Do I need to update my pet’s microchip registry before leaving Queensland?

Yes. Microchip details sit with a registry, not the council, so contact the registry that holds the chip. The City of Gold Coast says the HomeSafeID registry closed in February 2025, so check which of the four remaining registries holds your pet’s number and that your overseas contact details are on it.

Can I bring my pet back from Thailand to Brisbane later?

Yes, but not directly. Thailand is not on Australia’s approved country list, so the pet must first complete a qualifying stay in an approved country. Returning cats and dogs arrive at Melbourne for quarantine at Mickleham, so a Queensland household collects the pet in Victoria and then arranges a domestic leg home.
