Moving from Brisbane to Thailand means a sailing of 12 to 17 days from the Port of Brisbane to Laem Chabang, but the sailing is not the date that decides the move. Thai Customs lets used household goods arrive no earlier than one month before you and no later than six months after you, so the container has to be timed to the day your visa lets you land. A Queensland resident files that visa through the Thai embassy in Canberra, not the consulate in Sydney.
The catch is the order of three dates: the visa, the lease handover and the sailing. Put them in the wrong order and the container reaches Laem Chabang outside the duty-free window, or the household waits in Brisbane with nowhere to sleep.
A Brisbane Container Leaves From Fisherman Islands
The Port of Brisbane sits at Fisherman Islands. By its own figures it handled about 1,620,000 TEU of containers in 2024/25, and more than 20 shipping lines call on regular liner services. Wikipedia places it 23.7 km north-east of the Brisbane CBD and calls it the third-busiest port in Australia.
The container berths are run by three stevedores. The port’s berths and terminals page names Patrick Terminal, DP World and Brisbane Container Terminals, which together make up the equivalent of eight 300 m container berths. You will not choose between them. The shipping line your forwarder books decides which terminal takes the box, and the truck from your house makes the trip either way.
What you can influence is the distance. The port is 23.7 km from the CBD, so inner Brisbane addresses are close, while Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast addresses are further out. Our Australia to Thailand cost guide lists Brisbane as the only Queensland departure port in its table, so a household anywhere in South East Queensland shipping household goods from Brisbane to Thailand plans around the same sailings. Ask your forwarder to price the truck leg separately, so the cost of the road to Fisherman Islands is visible.
Twelve to Seventeen Days at Sea, and the Weeks Either Side
The cost guide’s port table puts Brisbane to Laem Chabang at 12 to 17 days via Singapore. That is the shortest upper limit on its east coast list: Sydney is 12 to 18 days and Melbourne 14 to 20. Our guides to moving from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth cover the other departure ports.
| Stage | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Export clearance and container loading | 3 to 5 days | Cost guide |
| Sailing, Brisbane to Laem Chabang via Singapore | 12 to 17 days | Cost guide |
| Thai customs clearance with documents in order | 3 to 5 working days for a full container, 5 to 7 for a shared one | FIDI customs guide |
| Delivery within Thailand | 1 to 3 days | Cost guide |
The cost guide plans on 25 to 40 days from packing day to a Thai address. It allows 5 to 12 working days for Thai clearance, which is wider than FIDI’s figure for a clean file, so a first-time mover should plan toward the longer end.
Testing the belief that early is safe
A common belief is that shipping early is safer because the container is waiting when you land. Test it with an illustrative date: suppose you land in Bangkok on 1 December 2026. Thai Customs’ household items guidance says the goods must be imported not earlier than one month before your arrival, so the window opens on 1 November. A ship that sails in 12 to 17 days has to leave Brisbane between 15 October and 20 October at the earliest to arrive inside it, and the window closes six months after you land, on 1 June 2027.
The belief holds only inside that window. A container that arrives earlier loses the duty-free treatment, and the earlier it sails, the more likely it arrives early. What would change the verdict is a visa date that moves, which is why the visa is settled before any booking.
A whole container or a share of one
Most one- and two-bedroom Brisbane to Thailand removals ship in a shared container, where you pay for the cubic metres you use, and a family house usually justifies its own 20-foot container. Our guide to shared-container shipping to Thailand covers how that is handled, our guide to part-load removals covers the buyer’s side, and the CBM size guide shows how many cubic metres a room produces.
Whether your Brisbane home fills a container or a share of one, a price on your real room count settles it.
A Queenslander’s Thai Visa Goes Through Canberra
The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra says it handles applications from residents of the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory, and that only New South Wales residents file with the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Sydney. Thailand’s stickerless e-Visa has been in place since 19 March 2024. The embassy quotes a processing time of at least 10 business days, and warns that some cases take four to six weeks.
The Thai visa from Queensland is therefore an online application, and that worst case is longer than the sailing. A container booked before the visa is granted can reach Laem Chabang before anyone knows which duty treatment it will get, so grant first, booking second.
The Visa Decides the Duty Bill
Every household shipped to Thailand is a bet that Thai Customs will accept it as the used household effects of someone changing residence. The FIDI customs guide, last updated on 5 July 2022, sorts visa holders into those who qualify and those who do not:
- Qualifies: a foreigner holding a one-year non-immigrant B visa with a valid one-year work permit when the shipment arrives, and a Smart visa holder on a full one-year visa.
- Does not qualify: holders of O and O-A visas, the retirement and guardian categories, and holders of Elite and ED education visas. The guide says they are subject to duties and taxes.
Because the guide is dated 2022, ask your forwarder or customs broker to confirm the current position for your visa before you plan around it. Our retirement visa shipping guide covers the retiree case in full. Thai Customs adds three conditions of its own. The goods must have been owned and used in the country where you lived before moving, one unit of each electrical appliance qualifies or two units for a family changing residence, and any excess unit pays regular duty.
The FIDI guide adds two rules that are set at origin and cannot be fixed later. Thai Customs accepts only one sea shipment and one small air shipment, so a second sea load pays full duty, and the shipment is consigned in your full name exactly as it appears in your passport, with the bill of lading describing the goods as “Used Personal effects & Household goods”. The guide also says household effects under six months old are subject to duties, so a new purchase made for the move does not qualify. Ship the house once. Our guide to Thailand’s six-month rule covers what happens at each edge of the window.
Ending a Brisbane Lease Without Paying for the Overlap
Most Brisbane households rent, and the lease sets the last date the house can be packed. The Residential Tenancies Authority’s page on ending a tenancy agreement says a tenant can end a fixed term at its end, or a periodic agreement, without giving a reason, using the Notice of intention to leave (Form 13) for a general tenancy. It also says a tenant who ends a fixed term early without a valid reason is breaking the lease and may have to pay compensation, including reletting costs.
The practical rule: let the lease end near your flight rather than ahead of it. The visa date comes first, the flight and container follow from it, and the lease handover is the one date that costs money on both sides if it is wrong.
One Jetstar Nonstop, and No Pets in Its Hold
Flightconnections, updated on 8 October 2026, lists a single nonstop operator between Brisbane and Bangkok: Jetstar, with 5 flights a week, departures between 1:00pm and 1:40pm, a flight time of 9 hours 20 minutes and a Boeing 787-8. A 1:00pm departure lands at about 7:20pm Bangkok time, because Brisbane is three hours ahead of Bangkok and the flight takes 9 hours 20 minutes. Every other routing connects somewhere.
That matters most for pets. Jetstar’s pet page says it is not equipped to transport pets and points owners to Qantas Freight, so a cheap Jetstar seat for you does not carry the animal. Our comparison of Australian airports for pet flights to Thailand covers the alternatives, and the Sydney and Perth city guides in this series cover pet transport from Sydney and from Perth.
Mind the clock when you book calls with a Thai customs broker. The NSW Government’s daylight saving page says New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving, and that Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. Thailand has no daylight saving, so Brisbane is 3 hours ahead of Bangkok all year, where Sydney and Melbourne are 4 hours ahead from 4 October 2026 to 4 April 2027. A 9am call from Brisbane is 6am in Bangkok in every month.
Where the Container Comes Ashore
Almost every Brisbane shipment arrives at Laem Chabang, on the Gulf coast in Chonburi province, and the last leg depends on where you are going:
- Bangkok and Pattaya. Moving from Brisbane to Bangkok ends with a same-day truck run once goods are released.
- Phuket. A long road leg and an island premium, covered in our Phuket relocation logistics guide.
- Chiang Mai. An inland leg long enough to change the cost, set out in our comparison of Chiang Mai and Bangkok relocation logistics.
Goods you want to keep but will not use for a year can sit in storage. Our guide to storage options when moving to Thailand compares keeping them in Queensland with storing them in Thailand.
What to Ship From Queensland and What to Leave
The FIDI guide lists categories that Thai Customs treats as dutiable even in a household shipment, and it says they are not considered for the exemption, especially when sent by air. They include toys, baby items, PC games, office items including files, bicycles, exercise and sports equipment, musical instruments and medical items such as a blood pressure monitor or a golf set. Wine and spirits, food, wood products and animal skins need special licensing and should not go in a shipment without prior consultation, and firearms, ammunition and gold and silver are prohibited.
Read that list against the Brisbane house before the survey, not after it. A bike rack in the garage and a child’s play kitchen are the kind of items that turn a duty-free shipment into a partly dutiable one, and the choice between shipping them and selling them is yours until the container is packed.
The Queensland Side of the Paperwork
The Australian Border Force says you need to lodge an export declaration for goods you export unless an exemption applies, and recommends using a customs broker or agent. A removal company or forwarder normally handles this for household moves, so your part is an accurate inventory. The ABF page adds that a declaration can be lodged up to six months before the goods are exported.
Moving from Brisbane to Thailand in the Right Order
- Settle the visa first. Know which visa you will hold and file it through the Canberra embassy’s e-Visa system before anything is booked.
- Measure the house. Get a survey or use the CBM guide, and decide between a shared container and your own.
- Fix the arrival window. Work back from the day you land so the container arrives no more than a month before you.
- Match the lease to the flight. Serve the Form 13 notice so the handover falls close to your departure.
- Sort the pet on its own timeline. Book the animal with a carrier that takes pets, since Jetstar does not.
- Pack, export and fly. Keep your passport with you, because Thai clearance needs the original.
Get the first three steps in order and the sailing becomes the least eventful part of the move. Our national guide for Australians moving to Thailand covers life on the other side, from banking to healthcare.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does shipping from Brisbane to Thailand take?
Our cost guide puts the sailing from the Port of Brisbane to Laem Chabang at 12 to 17 days via Singapore. From packing day to delivery at a Thai address it plans on 25 to 40 days once export preparation, Thai customs clearance and trucking are added.
Where do Brisbane residents apply for a Thai visa?
Residents of Queensland apply online through the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra’s e-Visa system. Only New South Wales residents file with the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Sydney. The embassy quotes at least 10 business days for processing and warns that some cases take four to six weeks.
Can I ship household goods from Brisbane to Thailand duty-free on a retirement visa?
Not on the retirement visa alone. The FIDI customs guide for Thailand, last updated on 5 July 2022, says holders of O and O-A visas are subject to duties and taxes. Confirm the current rule with your forwarder before planning around it.
How early can my container arrive in Thailand?
Thai Customs says used household effects must be imported not earlier than one month before you arrive and not later than six months after. A container that lands outside that window loses the duty-free treatment.
Is there a direct flight from Brisbane to Bangkok?
Yes. Flightconnections lists Jetstar as the only nonstop operator, with 5 flights a week and a flight time of 9 hours 20 minutes. Jetstar says it is not equipped to transport pets, so an animal needs a different routing.
